Doing Our Part
America’s Military and Veteran Caregivers, otherwise known as Hidden Heroes, are those that provide care and support for our nation’s veterans. It is estimated that there are 53 million caregivers in the United States as stated in Hidden Heroes: America’s Military Caregivers. Approximately 5.5 million are military / veteran caregivers. Hidden Heroes are caring for those who served in the military after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001,(Ramchand et al. 2014).
Although this undertaking is rewarding, the toll of providing nonstop care can lead to loss of income, jobs, or health care while commanding substantial physical and emotional tolls. While the outside world does not come to a halt, many caregivers are working full time jobs while maintaining their family life. Often, this leads to physical, mental, and emotional burnout.
Underground Yoga has committed to being part of a community of caregivers by proudly partaking in the Military and Veteran Caregiver Wellness Program. The focus is on wellness practices, nutrition, and infinite resources and support and is sponsored by Beachwood Center for Wellbeing, Rooted Life, Freedom Team Inc., Elizabeth Dole Foundation, and Underground Yoga.
Through this connection with our community, our hope is to not only foster the physical aspects of fitness during this time working with these amazing individuals, but also reveal the many different layers and benefits a yoga practice has the power to achieve.
We are hopeful that the various approaches mentioned will assist those caregivers in their continued journey to provide effective care for others and to also embrace the notion that they too require multifaceted self-care practices.
Needless to say, our part in this endeavor is very small in comparison to what our veterans and their caregivers selflessly contribute. Please consider supporting the Elizabeth Dole Foundation as it is the preeminent organization empowering, supporting and honoring our nation's Hidden Heroes. .
